Product Description:Renowned psychologist Peter Breggin documents how psychiatric drugs and electroshock disable the brain. He presents the latest scientific information on potential brain dysfunction and dangerous behavioral abnormalities produced by the most widely used drugs including Prozac, Xanax, Halcion, Ritalin, and lithium.
For this edition of the book, the concept of brain-disabling treatment has been updated and expanded with the additional concept of medication spellbinding (intoxication anosognosia). The neuroleptic chapters have been updated to include much more material on the newer, atypical drugs, and well as new information on the neurotoxicity and cytotoxicity of all antipsychotic drugs. A massive amount of new information about antidepressant drugs and the stimulant drugs has resulted in an additional chapter on each drug.
The new edition concludes with two entirely new chapters on treatment--one on how to safely withdraw from psychiatric drugs and the other about psychosocial and educational approaches to very disturbed people, including 20 guidelines for therapy.

Product Description:
Depression has become the single most commonly treated mental disorder, amid claims that one out of ten Americans suffer from this disorder every year and 25% succumb at some point in their lives. Warnings that depressive disorder is a leading cause of worldwide disability have been accompanied by a massive upsurge in the consumption of antidepressant medication, widespread screening for depression in clinics and schools, and a push to diagnose depression early, on the basis of just a few symptoms, in order to prevent more severe conditions from developing.
In The Loss of Sadness, Allan V. Horwitz and Jerome C. Wakefield argue that, while depressive disorder certainly exists and can be a devastating condition warranting medical attention, the apparent epidemic in fact reflects the way the psychiatric profession has understood and reclassified normal human sadness as largely an abnormal experience. With the 1980 publication of the landmark third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), mental health professionals began diagnosing depression based on symptoms--such as depressed mood, loss of appetite, and fatigue--that lasted for at least two weeks. This system is fundamentally flawed, the authors maintain, because it fails to take into account the context in which the symptoms occur. They stress the importance of distinguishing between abnormal reactions due to internal dysfunction and normal sadness brought on by external circumstances. Under the current DSM classification system, however, this distinction is impossible to make, so the expected emotional distress caused by upsetting events-for example, the loss of a job or the end of a relationship- could lead to a mistaken diagnosis of depressive disorder. Indeed, it is this very mistake that lies at the root of the presumed epidemic of major depression in our midst.
In telling the story behind this phenomenon, the authors draw on the 2,500-year history of writing about depression, including studies in both the medical and social sciences, to demonstrate why the DSM's diagnosis is so flawed. They also explore why it has achieved almost unshakable currency despite its limitations. Framed within an evolutionary account of human health and disease, The Loss of Sadness presents a fascinating dissection of depression as both a normal and disordered human emotion and a sweeping critique of current psychiatric diagnostic practices. The result is a potent challenge to the diagnostic revolution that began almost thirty years ago in psychiatry and a provocative analysis of one of the most significant mental health issues today.

The Loss of Sadness: How Psychiatry Transformed Normal

Product Description:
Can evolutionary theory explain depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders? The authors re-examine this old question in light of current research and show that evolution may indeed provide the essential framework for understanding both everyday human behavior and a range of mental ailments. Their discussion includes up-to-date research on emotions, moods, symptoms, and mental processing. The authors make a compelling case for the view that prominent features of mental disorders are simply adaptive responses to the environment and life's circumstances and that these responses can only be understood in the context of our long evolutionary past.

The Pocket Guide for the Textbook of Pharmacotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders is a quick reference guide for psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, and other practitioners to give them the bottom line about each group of medications. This guide, which discusses the use of psychiatric drugs in patients under 18, accompanies this author team's complete book, Textbook of Pharmacotherapy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders.
Clinical indications, dosage guidelines, side effects, common drug interactions and most tables are retained and updated in this new guide. In addition, the guide includes new research findings that have been published recently. This guide assumes the reader has done a complete assessment of all non-pharmacologic methods before treating the patient with medication. It also assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of the types of medication available for treating psychiatric illnesses. Once everything is taken into account, the practitioner can accurately determine the advantages and disadvantages of a specific treatment and relay that to the patient. Pocket Guide For Textbook Of Pharmocotherapy
Cheap Textbook: Hardcover
Manufacturer: Walter de Gruyter
Product Description:
Philosophy and psychiatry share many topics and problems. For example, the "solutions" of the psychiatry of the philosophical body-soul problem have direct effects on the self-image of the discipline. Despite these obvious overlappings, and unlike the English-speaking countries, interdisciplinary research on "philosophical psychopathology" has been scarce in Germany. The current anthology closes these gaps, because the authors - renowned experts as well as young scientists, whose new approaches open promising perspectives - come from both disciplines. The individual contributions deal with philosophical debates as they arise within the context of psychiatric theory and practice.
